Cape Girardeau Public Works prepares for road conditions

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) – City of Cape Girardeau workers are doing their best to keep drivers safe this winter season.

“It’s a little crazy around here when we have forecasted snow,” said Casey Brunke, with Cape Girardeau public works.

He says Public Works employees prepare the best they can for every situation when it comes to city streets.

“We do a lot of riding around and checking ourselves, some of the guys are out in their trucks, you know plowing and spreading salt, putting brine down, but then the supervisors are also out riding around seeing what the road conditions are, if they’re not changing, if what we’re doing is not working what do we need to do to try to help more,” said Brunke.

He adds that work crews will be working all night long and into the morning when snow or ice hits the ground.

Joe Rose is the Street Supervisor for the Public Works division.

He says keeping the main roads and roads around the hospitals are essential.

“I call them arteries of Cape you know it’s the main roads that everybody uses, for the most part,” said Rose. “So, they can get out if they need to or get back in, especially around the hospitals for ambulances and stuff like that.”

Rose explains the trucks have a GPS system that will show if a street has been plowed or not.

Rose asks for everyone to bear with them as not every street can be plowed immediately.

“The guys try their hardest, we try our hardest, to get every street in Cape,” he said.

Drivers are also advised to be cautious of snowplows on the road, and road conditions can be found on the MoDOT website.
