SENATH, Mo. (KBSI) – Charges are pending against a man who was arrested after an eight-hour standoff Monday night in Senath.

Kenneth L. Canday from Dunklin County faces several charges.

Senath Police Chief Omar Karnes says he and an officer from another town went to arrest Canday on pending warrants of assault and kidnapping.

Another man outside the house said Karnes was inside and had a gun.

That’s when Senath police called for backup.

Chief Karnes says Canday did not follow commands to come out of the home.

Two women were inside the home.

Authorities called Canday on the phone. Chief Karnes says Canday told them he would kill both women, himself and the officers.

Chief Karnes says after two or three hours of talking on the phone, they requested a hostage negotiator.

Chief Karnes says Canday released one of the females. She told authorities Canday did not have a gun, but did have a BB gun, swords and knives.

Chief Karnes says Canday has a history of cutting another female’s throat several years ago.

As authorities kept talking to Canday, they say he got more agitated. That’s when a negotiator from the SWAT team in Sikeston came and began talking to Canday.

Close to midnight, after eight hours of standoff and negotiations, the SWAT team went in and arrested Canday.

The remaining female was checked by medics and was unharmed.

Members of the Senath Police Department, Hornersville Police Department, Dunklin County Sheriff’s Office, a prosecutor investigator, Missouri State Highway Patrol, and SWAT team responded to the scene.

Canday was taken to jail on a no bond warrant.
