Police chase leads to water rescue from slough

WESTERN KY. (KBSI) – A Mayfield man faces several charges after a chase with sheriff’s deputies on Saturday.
Guadalupe Martinez, 37, of Mayfield faces charges of from Graves, Carlisle and Ballard counties that include speeding, fleeing and evading police 1st degree, aggravated driving under the influence 1st degree, wanton endangerment and several other traffic charges. He is also wanted out of Illinois for failure to appear.
Around 8:35 p.m. on Saturday, February 24, Carlisle County Sheriff’s Deputy Ben Green started a chase of a vehicle as it went through the intersection of Hwy. 121 and 62 at approximately 106 miles per hour.
Earlier in the evening Deputy Larry Jones of the Graves County Sheriff’s Office clocked a vehicle travelling at 100 miles an hour on Hwy. 45 North.
When he started the traffic stop, he was advised that they were being chased by a White Cadillac Escalade.
Deputy Jones saw the vehicle approaching his traffic stop and tried to motion for the vehicle to stop. The vehicle slowed and then suddenly accelerated away from the traffic stop, according to Carlisle County Sheriff’s deputies.
Deputy Jones tried to find the vehicle and told other law enforcement what happened.
Graves County Chief Deputy Jeremy Prince though he found the vehicle on Hwy. 121 going into Carlisle County.
He contacted Kentucky State Police dispatch who relayed the information to Carlisle County E 911 and Carlisle County law enforcement officials.
Once Carlisle County law enforcement started chasing the suspect vehicle, the Carlisle County E911 Center contacted the Ballard County E911 Center.
Ballard County Sheriff’s deputies set up stop sticks near the Dollar General in Wickliffe in preparation to try and stop the vehicle as it reached that area. In the meantime, Kentucky State Police also responded to the chase.
About four miles after crossing the Carlisle County-Ballard County line, the vehicle began to slow down and left the road behind home in the 3500 block of Hwy. 121 in Ballard County.
At 8:39 p.m. the vehicle crashed into a wooded area.
Sheriff’s deputies say Martinez left the vehicle and ran on foot.
Law enforcement set up a perimeter and a drone unit was requested from Carlisle County Emergency Management. Law Enforcement from Graves, Carlisle, and Ballard counties and Kentucky State Police tried to find Martinez.
The search continued until about 10 p.m. Around 10:25 p.m. while processing the vehicle, Deputy Green heard cries for help coming from a slough about 250 yards from the initial crash scene.
Deputy Green and Deputy Jones found Martinez about 75 yards into the slew in chest deep water and mud.
The incident changed from apprehension to rescue and recovery.
The Ballard County Rescue Squad and the Ballard County Ambulance service responded to the scene.
Graves County Sheriff’s Deputy Jones and Ballard County Sheriff’s Deputy Colin Garner got into the water and rescued Martinez who was hypothermic at that time.
He was placed into a rescue basket and carried to an ambulance by law enforcement and rescue squad personnel.
Martinez was taken to Jackson Purchase Medical Center for treatment.
