CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) — The day after Easter, known as Holy Monday, holds deep significance for the Catholic community. Churches and schools closed in observance of the holy day, allowing many to reflect on the recent death of Pope Francis and what lies ahead for the Church.

FOX23 reached out to local clergy to learn more about the late pontiff’s impact and legacy.

Pope Francis, who led the Catholic Church since March 13, 2013, died at the age of 88 from a stroke and heart failure. Known for his efforts to reshape the Church and emphasize humility, service and inclusiveness, his passing has left many mourning.

“He chose the name Francis, following in the spirituality of Saint Francis,” said Father Victor Anokwute, pastor at Saint Ann’s in Malden. “One of his greatest messages to pastors and priests was that they should be close to their people. He used to say, ‘A pastor should smell like the sheep.’”

Originally from Nigeria, Anokwute studied in the United States and remembers the moment Pope Francis was announced as the new pope. He said it deeply influenced his path to becoming a pastor.

“We are called to keep praying for him,” he said. “He has done the work the Lord called him to do, and now we pray for eternal rest. We also pray that God continues to guide the Church, especially in the election of the new pope. Pope Francis always emphasized the joy of the gospel—that we may have the joy of God in our hearts.”

In nearby Southern Illinois, Monsignor Thomas Flach serves four parishes in Perry County. He said Pope Francis’ commitment to simplicity and the people left a lasting impression.

“He wanted to be with the people,” Flach said. “He spoke often about the joy of the gospel—that priests and bishops should be with their flock.”

Flach praised the pope’s humility and ability to relate to people through shared experiences.

“He was very down-to-earth. He brought simplicity to the papacy and lived with strong principles,” Flach said. “His focus was on the marginalized, the poor. He followed in the footsteps of Jesus.”

According to CNN, Pope Francis requested a simple burial outside Vatican City. Funeral arrangements have yet to be finalized.
