New Madrid Police Chief resigns, successor appointed

NEW MADRID, Mo., (KBSI) — The city’s police chief is resigning, citing family and personal reasons, and a new chief has been appointed.

Outgoing Chief Shane Grissom thanked citizens for their trust and support during their tenure, which he described as one of the greatest honors of his life.

Grissom will continue to serve as fire chief and part-time patrol officer, remaining committed to the city’s safety and well-being.

The city has appointed Jeremy David “JD” Green as the new police chief. Green is a veteran of the United States Army and has 30 years of law enforcement experience.

The city expressed gratitude to Grissom for dedication to the department and looks forward to continuing to work with them.

City Administrator Aaron Griffin praised Grissom’s leadership during a transitional time.

“I wish him well,” Griffin said. “He really stepped up when we needed him. When our previous chief was elected sheriff of New Madrid County, Shane took over the role and led our department successfully during that period.”

Griffin said the police department remained in good hands under Grissom and expressed confidence in the department’s future under new leadership.

“We’re really excited about J.D. Green,” Griffin said. “He brings a lot of experience, both as a veteran of the United States Army and in law enforcement. We feel like he will lead the department well and bring that knowledge to our team.”

Green, recently served as assistant police chief in Portageville for the past four years. Now, he’s stepping into the role of police chief in New Madrid with clear goals in mind.

“Getting back up to full staff, working on narcotics, and just getting to know everybody,” Green said.

Green added that he’s looking forward to serving a close-knit community.

“We like our small towns,” he said. “Yes, it’s going great.”

Green said he plans to work closely with Grissom as both leaders aim to make New Madrid a safer place for all residents.
