Shield of Armor: Seminar supports mental health of first responders
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., (KBSI) — The Cape Girardeau Police Department and Beyond the Badge are hosting the 4th annual Shield of Armor Wellness Seminar on April 28-29.
The two-day event at the Drury Plaza Hotel Conference Center aims to promote mental health and well-being among first responders and their families.
Retired St. Louis County first responder Eric Hinson says the seminar addresses a critical need. “Even with all I experienced in my career, there comes a point where you need someone to talk to.”
Hinson recalled waking his wife up in the middle of the night to talk after a long shift. “You need somebody to talk to.”
The seminar features renowned experts discussing mental wellness, stress management and physical health, with a focus on PTSD and trauma-related mental health issues.
Kim Voelker, a first responder spouse, emphasized the importance of the seminar. “First responders carry a heavy weight on their shoulders due to the traumatic things they see and do daily.”
Participants will gain practical tools for self-improvement, including strategies to recognize and manage PTSD, trauma and stress.
Voelker noted that first responders often compartmentalize their emotions, but the seminar encourages them to open up. “It’s okay to not be okay, and it’s okay to talk about it.”
Over 150 people are attending the seminar, including crews from as far away as Florida, according to Patrolman Bobby Newton of the Cape Girardeau Police Department.
Keynote speakers include Greg Stube, Dr. Erin Craw and Jason Schechterle.
