Taxiway Delta Reconstruction Set to Begin at Cape Girardeau Regional Airport

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) — Construction on Taxiway Delta at Cape Girardeau Regional Airport is set to begin the week of June 2, with work expected to last through the fall, all dependent on weather conditions.

Airport Manager Jo Jo Stuart said the reconstruction is necessary due to the deteriorating condition of the pavement, which creates a safety risk for smaller aircraft using the taxiway that the airport is looking to avoid.

“It was getting in really bad condition, starting to fall apart,” Stuart said. “You can’t have little debris getting into the props or flung up, that can be hazardous to the aircraft.”

The original plan called for a 10 day closure of the airport’s GA runway. However, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) approved a revised plan allowing nighttime work after the final flight of the night. This change means commercial airline service will continue uninterrupted.

“That would have been a pretty significant interruption to our airlines,” Stuart said. “It’s not like we have a lot of flights to begin with, so any one interruption would impact a lot of people.”
