Jackson R-2 School District hosts ‘Bus Driver Academy’ to recruit new drivers

JACKSON, Mo. (KBSI)— The Jackson R-2 School District is preparing to recruit school bus drivers by hosting a Bus Driver Academy this Saturday, showcasing the important role transportation staff plays in student success.

Covering 280 square miles each school day, the district’s transportation department works with around 3,000 students across approximately 4,000 miles daily.

Associate Superintendent of District Operations Bryan Austin said finding new drivers is a growing need for many school districts, but most importantly for him, Jackson.

“This Saturday, we’re hosting a bus driver academy from 7 to 11 a.m. at Jackson High School,” Austin said. “We’re looking to add some drivers from this academy.”

The event will give new drivers a hands on look at what it takes to be a school bus driver. Participants will have the opportunity to speak with transportation staff, view the buses and even test drive in the school’s parking lot.

“This is a way for us to show the community what this position is about,” Austin said. “If someone is interested, they can get behind the wheel and see if it’s a good fit.”

The district operates 72 personally owned busses and is looking to fill both full time and part time positions, with training available for candidates who don’t yet have a commercial driver’s license (CDL).

“We have staff who can help with all of the training requirements,” Austin said. “We’re just looking for as many people as possible who are interested.”

The district’s transportation department was recently recognized at the state safety competition, with several team members earning individual awards. Now, the district is looking for the next wave of award winning drivers.

“We’ll have all the information they need at the event,” Austin added. “We look forward to seeing everyone this Saturday.”

Those who want to learn how to become new bus drivers can meet at the Jackson high school Saturday, from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m.
