Gas prices lower ahead of busy Labor Day travel weekend
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI)- Drivers heading out for the Labor Day holiday can expect cheaper gas prices compared to this time last year, and heavier traffic on the roadways, according to AAA.
“It is going to be a busy Labor Day holiday weekend, much like we’ve seen for the rest of the summer holidays this year,” said Nick Chabarria, spokesperson for AAA. “It’s good news for drivers … gas prices [are] down somewhat considerably compared to last year.”
Chabarria said prices in Missouri are averaging $2.87 per gallon, about 20 to 30 cents lower than this time last year. In Illinois, the statewide average sits at $3.54, while Kentucky drivers are paying about $3.01. All three states are reporting year-over-year declines.
While Labor Day is typically a holiday where more people stay home, Chabarria warned travelers to prepare for added traffic, especially near major metro areas.
“The earlier you can leave in your travel day, the better,” he said. “Whether that’s maybe packing up the car the night before and heading out first thing in the morning … that’s going to help you avoid some of the heaviest congestion.”
He also encouraged drivers to check their vehicles before hitting the road, particularly after recent hot weather. That includes inflating tires properly, topping off fluids, getting an oil change if needed and checking the car battery.
