MDC Cape Nature Center announces free September programs

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., (KBSI) – The Missouri Department of Conservation’s (MDC) Cape Girardeau Conservation Nature Center will host a variety of free programs in September, offering opportunities for residents to learn about hunting, fishing, birding and conservation.

Programs include both in-person and virtual events:

Game Bird Hunting: Here’s the Deal with Teal (Virtual) – Sept. 11, noon to 1 p.m. Participants will learn what to expect during their first teal hunt, including how to prepare, navigate the morning draw and choose a spot in the blind.

Conservation Adults: Nature Center Game Night (In-Person) – Sept. 11, 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Cape Nature Center. This monthly board game club features nature-themed games and their connection to Missouri’s conservation mission. Recommended for ages 12 and older.

Birds & Brew (In-Person) – Sept. 13, 8 a.m. to noon at the Mingo National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center. Participants can enjoy bird-friendly coffee before a short hike along the Swampwalk Boardwalk. Binoculars will be provided if needed.

Learn to Fish: Deep Dive – Black Bass (Virtual) – Sept. 17, noon to 1 p.m. MDC experts will discuss the biology and ecology of Missouri’s black bass species and share fishing tips.

Fishing Fin-atics: Fly Tying (In-Person) – Sept. 25, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Cape Nature Center. Anglers can learn fly tying and practice casting with a fly rod. Equipment will be provided.

Advance registration is required for most programs, including both in-person and virtual events. Once registered, participants will receive program details and, for virtual programs, a link prior to the event.

. Families are also encouraged to register children and homeschool students for this month’s Little Acorns and Babes in the Woods story times.

The Cape Girardeau Conservation Nature Center is located at 2289 County Park Drive. The center is open Tuesday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., while the White Oak Trace Trails are open daily from sunrise to 10 p.m.
