PADUCAH, Ky., (KBSI) — UPDATE: The Downtown Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony has been canceled due to the threat of storms this afternoon and evening, officials announced Friday.

Organizers said the decision was made for the safety of participants and the public. The Christmas tree will still be lit tonight and remain illuminated throughout the holiday season, but the formal ceremony will not take place.

The community is invited to join Mayor George Bray and the Paducah Board of Commissioners for the Downtown Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony on Tuesday, Nov. 18.

The celebration will begin at 5:30 p.m. on Water Street in front of the floodwall opening between Broadway and Jefferson Street. The Board will “flip the switch” at the end of the event to illuminate Paducah’s 26-foot Christmas tree.

The evening will include musical performances by the Paducah Storm Watch Step Team and the Paducah Middle School Choir, as well as hot chocolate, craft activities and visits from Santa and Mrs. Claus.

Water Street between Broadway and Jefferson Street will be closed to traffic during the ceremony.

Holiday lights will also be on display throughout downtown, including at Locomotive 1518 near the Carson Center, along Broadway, and at Paducah City Hall. Pole decorations on Jefferson Street and Walter Jetton Boulevard will also be featured throughout the season.
