Carbondale reminds residents of sidewalk snow, ice removal requirements

CARBONDALE, Ill., (KBSI) — As the National Weather Service forecasts potentially hazardous winter weather this weekend, the City of Carbondale is reminding residents of sidewalk snow and ice removal requirements.
City officials said property owners and occupants are required under the Carbondale Revised Code to clear snow, sleet and ice from sidewalks adjoining their properties. If accumulation cannot be removed without damaging the sidewalk, residents are required to apply abrasive materials.
A cleared path at least 30 inches wide must be provided within 48 hours after snowfall or other freezing precipitation ends, according to the city.
Residents with questions about snow and ice removal can contact Building and Neighborhood Services. City officials noted residents will be notified if city buildings or services, including water and sewer offices, are closed due to the storm. Bills can be paid online, and issues can be reported through the city’s SeeClickFix system.
Officials also urged residents to take safety precautions while clearing sidewalks, including dressing appropriately for cold conditions and taking breaks to avoid overexertion.
