Peregrine falcons return to Franklin County nest; live stream underway

ST. LOUIS, Mo., (KBSI) — A pair of peregrine falcons has returned to a nesting site in Franklin County, where at least one egg has been laid, according to Ameren Missouri.
The nest is now viewable through the company’s Falcon Cam, offering a live look at the birds’ nesting season from egg-laying through the chicks’ first flight.
Officials said the return follows a successful fledging season last year and signals continued progress for the species in Missouri.
“Peregrine falcons may have recovered nationally, but they remain vulnerable in Missouri,” said Julianne Randazzo, an environmental scientist with Ameren Missouri. “Sharing the journey of these birds helps support ongoing conservation efforts.”
Peregrine falcons typically lay three to five eggs in early spring, with an incubation period of about 30 days. Young birds usually take their first flight by mid-June.
Known as one of the fastest animals in the world, peregrine falcons can reach speeds of more than 200 mph while hunting.
Christopher Cain, an urban wildlife biologist with the Missouri Department of Conservation, said the live stream provides insight into the challenges and behaviors of the species.
The Falcon Cam is available daily from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. CDT.
