CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., (KBSI) — The speech and debate team at Southeast Missouri State University earned national recognition after competing in the National Speech Championship.

Two students advanced to the quarterfinals, with Trey Lintner placing in dramatic interpretation and Erin Jenkins advancing in informative speaking.

Lintner, a sophomore double majoring in mass communication: TV and film and theatre, said the experience has helped him grow as a speaker and connect with his teammates.

“This team has helped me find a place where I belong at SEMO,” Lintner said. “I’m constantly improving my speaking, reasoning and improvisation skills.

Competing in dramatic interpretation allows me to use storytelling to advocate for what I believe in.

Speech and debate have been the perfect opportunity to practice effectively communicating and listening in a way that will take me far in the professional world.”

Team members prepared for the competition through regular practices and collaboration throughout the academic year, refining performances over time.

“Tournaments are fun, challenging and rewarding,” said Noah Smentkowski, a communication studies and modern languages instructor and the team’s coach.

“They allow students to grow their skills; share topics they are passionate about and build lasting friendships with teammates and competitors from across the country.”

University officials said the program provides students with opportunities to develop communication and leadership skills through hands-on experience.
