CARBONDALE, Ill., (KBSI) — A Carbondale man was arrested Sunday after a shooting at a business on South Illinois Avenue left two people injured, police said.

Carbondale police responded around 10:35 a.m. May 17 to the 800 block of South Illinois Avenue for a report of a possible shooting.

Officers found one victim suffering from a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the foot. While searching the area, officers located and arrested Ricardo Rodriguez-Rivas, 40, of Carbondale.

Investigators later learned a second victim had arrived at a local hospital with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound connected to the incident.

Police said Rodriguez-Rivas and one of the victims were acquaintances involved in a domestic relationship and had been involved in an altercation near the business before the shooting.

According to investigators, the victim entered the business and Rodriguez-Rivas followed inside, where police say he fired a handgun and became involved in a physical fight with the victim. A firearm was recovered at the scene.

Police said the uninvolved victim was treated and released from the hospital. The other victim remained hospitalized in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries.

A Civic Alert was issued advising the public to avoid the area during the investigation.

Rodriguez-Rivas was jailed in Jackson County pending a detention hearing. Police said additional charges may be filed.
