CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) — One week after rescuing a driver from floodwaters during historic rainfall in Cape Girardeau, local food truck owner Miguel Morales received a city proclamation recognizing his actions.
City leaders honored Morales during Monday night’s Cape Girardeau City Council meeting for rescuing Thomas Beasley after flash flooding overwhelmed roadways on June 8.
According to the proclamation, Morales entered rapidly rising floodwaters and rescued Beasley from a vehicle trapped in a flooded culvert, helping prevent what city leaders described as a potential tragedy.
“Mr. Morales demonstrated extraordinary bravery, selflessness and concern for the safety and well-being of a fellow community member,” the proclamation stated.
The rescue drew widespread attention throughout the community, with customers lining up at Morales’ Tacon Madre food truck in the days following the incident to thank him for his actions.
Before the meeting, local business owner Al Bisher shared a statement from the Beasley family with FOX23. During the ceremony, Derek Beasley read the family’s message aloud.
“Thomas Beasley and family would like to express our deepest gratitude for all the prayers and outpouring of support,” the statement said. “We will never be able to thank Miguel Morales, paramedics, EMS and the fire department enough for saving such a vital member of our family.”
The statement continued, “If it wasn’t for Miguel, the last seven days would look a lot different. Mr. Morales showed true selflessness and bravery, traits not seen often in this day and age. He is an example of what we should strive to be.”
The family also shared an update on Thomas Beasley’s condition, saying he is out of intensive care, off life support and continuing to recover.
Morales thanked the community for its support and said he continues to pray for Beasley’s recovery.
“Thank you so much for everything,” Morales said. “I am praying for this guy and recovery very soon. God bless him for life.”
The proclamation states Morales’ actions exemplify the best of the Cape Girardeau community and serve as an example of compassion, courage and public service.
