Illinois expands pharmacist access to contraception under updated standing order

SPRINGFIELD, Ill., (KBSI) — The Illinois Department of Public Health has expanded access to reproductive health products by updating a statewide standing order that allows trained pharmacists to provide additional contraceptive options directly to patients.
The updated order builds on a 2023 policy that authorized pharmacists to dispense certain prescription hormonal contraceptives. Under the new expansion, pharmacists may also provide prescription non-hormonal contraception and emergency contraception.
State health officials said the change is intended to improve access to reproductive health care and reduce barriers for Illinois residents seeking contraceptive services.
“Reproductive health care must be accessible, safe, timely and centered around the needs of Illinois residents,” IDPH Director Dr. Sameer Vohra said in a statement.
Before dispensing prescription contraception, pharmacists must complete state-approved training and ensure patients meet medical eligibility requirements. Patients must also complete a self-screening risk assessment. If a pharmacist determines they cannot safely provide the medication, they must refer the patient to a physician or other health care provider.
The standing order also includes prescriptions for over-the-counter contraceptive products, emergency contraception, condoms and pregnancy tests to help support insurance coverage requirements.
State officials said the expanded order is part of broader efforts under Gov. JB Pritzker’s administration to increase access to reproductive health services, including funding for provider training, support for birth equity initiatives and expanded access to family planning services through Illinois’ Title X program.
The updated standing order is now in effect statewide.
