SOUTHERN ILLINOIS, (KBSI) – The U.S. Department of Transportation has selected American Airlines to provide Essential Air Service at Veterans Airport of Southern Illinois.
The two-year contract will run from Aug. 1, 2026, through July 31, 2028. Under the agreement, American Airlines will operate 12 weekly round-trip flights between Marion and O’Hare International Airport using 65-seat regional jet aircraft.
Airport leaders previously recommended the American Airlines proposal earlier this year, citing larger aircraft capacity, increased seat availability, projected passenger growth and the lowest-cost proposal submitted to the U.S. Department of Transportation.
“This is the greatest air service opportunity we have had through the Essential Air Service program over the last 17 years,” Airport Director Doug Kimmel said in a statement.
Kimmel also called the addition of American Airlines “a game changer for Southern Illinois air service,” citing the airline’s global network and expanded passenger capacity through the use of larger regional jets.
Airport officials said the new service will more than double the current seating capacity at Veterans Airport and is expected to expand travel options for passengers across Southern Illinois.
Several airlines submitted proposals during the selection process. Airport officials said American Airlines projected the highest passenger totals while requiring the lowest federal subsidy cost.
The first American Airlines flights between Marion and Chicago O’Hare are expected to begin Aug. 1.
