CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) — A Cape Girardeau High School sophomore is gaining attention after breaking a school record in the 100-meter dash and emerging as one of the fastest runners in Missouri.

Taraji Riley posted a time of 11.80 seconds, setting a new record for Cape Girardeau High School after tying the previous mark last season.

According to school officials, Riley’s time now ranks second in the state across all classes and first in Class 4.

Riley was also recently named Taco Bell Athlete of the Month, adding to a growing list of accomplishments early in her high school career.

Cape Central’s Athletic Director, Derek Gohn, said Riley’s success is the result of consistent effort, particularly during the offseason.

“I think her putting more time into track and more time in the weight room has really helped her grow and develop,” Gohn said. “She set our school record and our stadium record — she tied it last year, broke it this year — and just the time she’s put in during the offseason has really helped her grow as an athlete.”

In addition to track, Riley also competes in softball and maintains a full academic schedule. Gohn said that balance, along with her calm and easygoing personality, has helped her handle the pressure of competing at a high level.

He also pointed to the school’s strength and conditioning program, led by Aaron King, as a key factor in her development putting and the overall growth of Cape Girardeau athletics.

Riley is expected to compete this weekend in the St. Louis area against top teams, with district and state competitions approaching later this season.
