CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) — More than 300 young swimmers from across southeast Missouri are expected to compete in the 2026 Southeast Missouri Swim Conference Championship on Saturday at the Cape Aquatic Center.

The meet, hosted by River City Aquatics in partnership with the City of Cape Girardeau Parks and Recreation Department, marks the culmination of the conference’s summer swim season.

Competition begins at 8 a.m. Saturday at the Cape Aquatic Center, 1920 Whitener St. Swimmers ranging in age from about 5 to 18 will compete in age divisions from 8 and under through 15-18 in individual and relay events.

“Being able to host more than 300 young athletes is something our community can be proud of,” Aquatics Facilities Supervisor Robert Shanahan said in a statement. “These swimmers have spent their summer learning, training and building confidence. We are excited to provide a facility where they can celebrate that hard work and compete at a championship level.”

The Cape Aquatic Center features a 25-yard-by-50-meter competition pool equipped with a Colorado Timing System, touchpads and a digital scoreboard. Ten lanes will be used for competition, while additional space will remain available for warm-ups and cool-downs throughout the meet.

City officials said the event is expected to bring hundreds of parents, coaches, volunteers and spectators to Cape Girardeau, providing a boost to local restaurants, businesses and attractions.

Shanahan said the championship also highlights the value of youth sports and the importance of providing opportunities for young athletes to develop confidence, teamwork and perseverance.
