Cape Girardeau urges utility customers to switch to paperless billing

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., (KBSI) — The City of Cape Girardeau is encouraging water, sewer and trash customers to switch to paperless billing following reports of utility bills arriving on or after their due dates.
City officials said customers have recently reported delays in receiving bills through the mail. Late fees are assessed when payments are not received by the due date, regardless of postal delays.
Customers who enroll in electronic billing receive their bills about 20 days before payment is due, according to the city.
“We encourage everyone to take advantage of free electronic billing and payment options,” Utility Billing Manager Trisha Holloway said.
The city offers several options, including free electronic billing, automatic payments and online payments by credit card, debit card or electronic check. Fees apply to some online payment methods.
According to the city, approximately $128,000 from its water, sewer and trash funds is spent on postage each year. Officials said reducing those costs could allow more money to be used for system repairs, maintenance and improvements.
Customers can find billing and payment options through the City of Cape Girardeau’s website.
The city is also encouraging residents to sign up for alerts about boil water advisories, holiday reminders and other water, sewer and trash information.
