BARDWELL, Ky. (KBSI) — A fundraiser will be held Saturday, July 11, to help a Bardwell family purchase a wheelchair-accessible van for their 10-year-old daughter, Kaylie Hammond.

The event will take place from 4 to 7 p.m. in the cafeteria at Carlisle County Elementary School, 4557 Ky. 1377.

The fundraiser will feature barbecue sandwich dinners, chips, a drink and dessert available for purchase, along with silent and live auctions. Admission is free.

Proceeds will benefit Help Hope Live in honor of Kaylie Hammond. Community fundraising efforts have already raised more than $12,800 toward the purchase of the van.

Kaylie was born with multiple complex medical conditions, including hydrocephalus, epilepsy and a visual impairment. She requires ongoing specialized medical care and travels about 12 hours round trip to see medical specialists.

Her mother, Tammy Hammond, said insurance will not cover the cost of a wheelchair-accessible van.

“Traveling involves a lot of medical supplies for her comfort and safety,” Hammond said. “An accessible van will improve both our safety and efficiency.”

Kaylie attends Carlisle County Elementary School and has lived in Bardwell her entire life.

The Hammond family partnered with Help Hope Live, a national nonprofit that assists families with fundraising for transplant-related and catastrophic medical expenses. Donations are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law and are administered by the nonprofit to cover verified medical and related expenses.

Tammy Hammond said the family hopes the community’s support will help give Kaylie greater independence and opportunities.

“We want to ensure her medical diagnoses never fully define who she is or limit what she can achieve,” Hammond said. “We want her to experience the world with comfort and love.”
