‘Love for Lee’ fundraiser celebrates Leland Arnett’s life

DE SOTO, Il. (KBSI) — More than a month after 8-year-old Leland Arnett died following a domestic violence incident, hundreds of people gathered Sunday to celebrate his life and support the family he left behind.

The “Love for Lee” fundraiser featured food, a silent auction, a live auction and handmade items, with all proceeds benefiting Leland’s family as his mother continues recovering from the May 17 attack.

Leland died four days after suffering critical injuries in a May 17 domestic violence attack in De Soto. His family says he died protecting his mother, Deborah Snider, who was also seriously injured.

Doctors told the family Snider had only a 5% chance of surviving and warned she might never walk or speak again. Today, she is walking, talking and driving as she continues her recovery.

Elizabeth Sears, a crime victim advocate who helped organize the fundraiser, said the event was about giving the community an opportunity to support the family.

“The goal of the fundraiser was to give people in the community a space to come together and support the family,” Sears said.

Leland’s 11-year-old brother, Brody Kirk, spoke about his younger brother during the event before ringing a bell in his honor.

“…This is Leland. He was my brother. He was the best thing you could ever see,” Brody said.

Brody also received the City of De Soto’s Leland D. Arnett Hero Award, recognizing his extraordinary efforts and selfless actions earlier this year.

Organizers and family members said they hope people remember Leland not only for the tragedy surrounding his death but also for the love, kindness and bravery that defined his life.

Snider thanked everyone who attended and supported the fundraiser.

“I appreciate the entire support from the communities and from various people,” she said. “Thank you.”

All proceeds from Sunday’s fundraiser will go toward helping Leland’s family as they continue moving forward after the tragedy.

Court records show the suspect, 36-year-old Marcus L. Moultrie is charged with first-degree murder and other offenses in connection with the case.

Victims can learn more about their rights by visiting the Illinois Attorney General’s Office website or their state’s attorney general website.
