Missouri offers insurance guidance for storm, flood recovery

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KBSI) — The Missouri Department of Commerce and Insurance is encouraging residents affected by recent severe storms and flooding to seek assistance as they navigate the insurance claims process.

The department said it is available to answer questions, investigate complaints, monitor insurance companies and help mediate coverage disputes for consumers recovering from severe weather.

“Navigating insurance after severe storms and flash flooding can be incredibly overwhelming, especially when families are dealing with the physical and emotional toll of the damage,” DCI Director Angela Nelson said in a statement.

Officials are reminding homeowners that standard homeowners insurance policies do not cover flood damage. Separate flood insurance policies are required for flood-related losses, though some homeowner’s policies may provide additional living expense coverage if a home is uninhabitable because of covered damage, such as wind.

The department also urged consumers to understand the difference between public adjusters and contractors. Public adjusters negotiate insurance claims on behalf of policyholders and must be licensed in Missouri, while contractors perform repair work.

DCI is also warning residents to be on the lookout for scams targeting storm victims. Officials recommend avoiding contractors who demand full payment upfront, verifying licenses and business credentials before signing contracts, and reporting suspected fraud to the department and the Missouri Attorney General’s Office.

Consumers needing assistance can contact the Missouri Department of Commerce and Insurance’s Consumer Hotline at 800-726-7390 or visit the department’s website for claims resources and recovery information.
