1 killed, 3 arrested after Carbondale shooting

CARBONDALE, Ill. (KBSI) – One person was killed and three people were arrested after a shooting on Monday, Oct. 3 in Carbondale.

Police were called to the 700 block of South Lewis Lane at 1:25 p.m. in reference to a report of shots fired.

Officers found a gunshot victim and learned the suspect left the scene.

The victim is identified as John Pruitt,  37, of Chicago. Officers provided life saving measures to the Pruitt. He was transported to the Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.

David Evans Jr., 29, of Carbondale, faces a first degree murder charge.

Police say Pruitt was shot in the 200 block of North Wall Street. Pruitt and Edwards are known acquaintances. Police say they had an ongoing dispute.

Officers also arrested Lawrence Abernathy, 27, of Carbondale, and Anthony S. Spruille, 26, of Carterville during a vehicle stop in the area at South Wall Street and East College Street.

Abernathy and Spruille face obstruction of justice charges.

Edwards was in custody in the Jackson County Jail. Abernathy and Spruille were released on recognizance bonds.

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Department, the SIU Police Department, the Jackson County Coroner’s Office, the Jackson County Ambulance Service and the Jackson County State’s Attorney’s Office all assisted in the investigation. The investigation remains active and ongoing.
