WASHINGTON (AP) — Sen. Mitch McConnell said Sunday that a fall led to his hospitalization, breaking weeks of silence about his condition after mounting speculation about the Kentucky Republican’s health.

McConnell, 84, said he was “briefly unconscious” around the time he was taken to the hospital June 14 and has since undergone extensive testing to determine what caused the fall. He said doctors confirmed he did not suffer broken bones, a concussion, a heart attack, a stroke, tumors or hemorrhages.

He was also treated for mild pneumonia and has since been transferred to a rehabilitation facility, where he is “regaining my strength.”

McConnell said he delayed providing details because “folks of my generation often hesitate to share the vulnerability that comes with growing older.”

The Office of the Attending Physician said McConnell has experienced several falls this year related to his post-polio condition. According to the physician’s statement, a comprehensive evaluation found no fractures, cardiac abnormalities, stroke, tumors or hemorrhages. McConnell is undergoing physical therapy to reduce his risk of future falls.

McConnell said he is continuing to work on Senate business with his staff while recovering and intends to return to complete the remainder of his Senate term.
