VIENNA, Ill., (KBSI) — Two Vienna High School seniors are graduating with welding certifications after completing a dual-enrollment program through Shawnee Community College.

Daniel Holderfield and Hunter Wasuleski completed Shawnee Community College’s one-year welding program while also finishing their high school coursework at Vienna High School.

The program partnership between Shawnee Community College and area high schools allows students to complete college-level welding training while still enrolled in high school.

According to Shawnee Community College, the Combination Welding certificate program prepares students for careers in welding, manufacturing, construction and industrial trades. Training includes arc welding, MIG welding, TIG welding, pipe welding, blueprint reading and workplace safety.

Vienna Superintendent Dr. Joshua Stafford said the program provides students with opportunities to complete workforce training tied to high-demand careers before graduating high school.

Vienna guidance counselor Rhi Slife said Shawnee Community College plans to continue offering the welding program next school year, along with an automotive program for area high school students.

School officials said the partnership is designed to expand career and technical education opportunities for students throughout the region.
