Young entrepreneurs turn dog treat business into support for shelter pets

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) — What started as a love of baking and helping animals has grown into an award-winning business for two local girls who are using their success to support shelter pets.
Addy Quigley, 14, and Journey VerVynck, 12, created Wagging Wonders Dog Treats after spending time volunteering at SEMO Pets. The pair said they wanted to combine their passion for baking with their desire to help dogs waiting for permanent homes.
The business recently earned first place and a $1,000 prize at the Future Makers Market Youth Entrepreneurship Day at the Cape Riverfront Market.
The girls said their idea began after noticing a need for dog treats while volunteering at the shelter.
“We love baking and volunteering,” said Quigley. “Because we love to make dogs happy, we started off with just a peanut butter recipe we found.”
Since then, Wagging Wonders has expanded to include a variety of homemade dog treats, including pumpkin treats, banana loaves, carrot cakes and dog-friendly “cinnamon rolls.”
The entrepreneurs have also used their business to support SEMO Pets. During the farmers market, customers had the option to purchase treats for shelter dogs. The following day, the girls delivered the donations to the shelter, ensuring every dog in the shelter received a special treat.
“We were super happy about it,” said VerVynck. “It showed us we can make a difference and people can support businesses that help the community.”
The girls said helping shelter animals remains their primary motivation.
“We both have a very big place in our heart for the dogs, the shelter dogs, because they go through a very rough time,” said VerVynck.
Looking ahead, Quigley and VerVynck hope to continue growing their business through community events and custom orders. They also share a long-term goal inspired by their volunteer work.
“If we keep doing good and making dog treats and stuff, when we are older, we would love to open an animal shelter,” said Quigley.
For now, the pair plans to continue baking treats, supporting shelter animals and encouraging other young people to get involved in their communities.
“I would say keep up the hard work and do what you can and love all animals,” said Quigley. “As long as you believe in yourself, you can do anything.”
