Storm chances continue through early next week
As we close out the weekend and reflect back on this Mother’s Day, temperatures were very warm this afternoon! Cape Girardeau saw 88°, and the last time the area saw temperatures that warm was back in 2018. It ties the third warmest Mother’s Day on record, with records dating back as far as 1961.
As for our morning low temperature, they commonly are in the 50s on Mother’s Day. However, we saw temperatures in the middle 60s to start Sunday.
During the day, a backdoor cold front has been pushing in from the northeast, causing scattered showers and storms across the area. A few severe storms have been warned for damaging winds up to 70 mph, and half dollar-sized hail.
Rain chances exist through most of Monday, even though the better chance for some scattered storms comes by the early evening.
This time, a wave will move in from the southwest and push northeast. Storms look to remain on the weaker end than the activity we’ve seen through Sunday.
For that reason, a Marginal (Level 1 of 5) risk has been issued for some of southeast Missouri through Monday night.
Drier and cooler air is expected through the first part of next week. Temperatures will hang in the upper 70s and lower 80s for some time looking ahead. For now, scattered storm chances will continue into Monday.
