Cape Girardeau Fire Department brings safety tips for Thanksgiving dinner

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI)- People are getting ready to cut into their unpardoned turkey’s and the City of Cape Girardeau Fire Department wants to make sure you’re deep frying them safely.
“There’s fires across the nation that we see where people who are improperly frying a turkey.” Fire Chief Randy Morris says to make sure your turkey fryer is on a level surface and to not move it once it is in use, “Don’t do these inside your garage, don’t do it on a covered porch, or on a back patio.”
Morris says to make sure it is at least 10 feet from your home and not under the eaves of the roof.
Also, making sure to keep the amount of oil you need at a safe level to prevent overfilling your pot.
Morris says, “It will boil over when you drop the turkey into the turkey fryer of hot oil, it will hit the flame, and then cause a larger fire.”
To best protect yourself and your family, always use protective oven mitts and keep children and pets at least three
feet from the turkey fryer.
