Gas prices rise in Missouri after yearly low, AAA provides travel tips for holidays
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) – AAA estimates that some 115 millions Americans will be travelling for the holidays, and I spoke with Illinois resident David Gregge, who will be doing just that, and he says he is making sure to get gas in Missouri before he heads out.
“I’ll save 30 cents a gallon any day,” he said.
And Gregge said he will make sure to leave early to try to get ahead of some of the heavy traffic.
“We’re leaving very early to try to beat the rush,” he said. “I know by the time we get to Indianapolis it’s going to be busy though. We are going to leave early, that’s the main thing.”
And leaving early is exactly what AAA Missouri Public Affairs Specialist Nick Chabarria suggested.
“We’ll see the heaviest traffic most days in the early afternoon to early evening hours,” he said. “Leaving first thing in the morning to head out, that’s going to be your best bet at avoiding some of the heaviest traffic.”
And after reaching a yearly low of $2.64 per gallon, the average gas price in Missouri rose to $2.71 this week, which is comparable to what it has been around the holidays in recent years.
Chabarria said one of the best things drivers can do to get the best gas mileage possible is to keep an eye on the air pressure of your vehicle’s tires.
“Something as simple as properly inflated tires are going to help keep you safe on the road, and they’re also going to save you money,” he said.
For travelers taking to the air, Chabarria shared this advice when it comes to any holiday gifts you may be bringing along with you onboard.
“Although you can take wrapped presents through security, TSA may have to open those up to see if there’s any security questions, so usually using gift bags are what’s recommended so you don’t mess up your good Christmas wrapping,” Chabarria said.
