BBB Tips: How to hire a moving company

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., (KBSI)- Moving season is off and running, and Better Business Bureau (BBB) has tips for finding a moving company you can trust.
Half of all household moves happen in the summer.
Movers are among the top categories of companies searched on BBB.org, and they’re in high demand at this time of year.
The stakes are high when movers handle your precious belongings.
Accidents can happen and items can be lost.
This makes it all the more important to hire a company that will treat your possessions with respect.
BBB received over 2,700 complaints about moving companies in 2023.
Common complaints included damaged or missing items, bills that were higher than estimates, late deliveries and in some cases, belongings held hostage for additional payments.
Consumers also reported 158 moving scams to BBB ScamTrackerSM last year.
In 2020, BBB published an investigative study on this subject.
“Finding a trustworthy mover is the first step toward a stress-free move,” said Michelle L. Corey, BBB St. Louis president and CEO. “Check movers out with BBB and read the moving company’s contracts so there are no surprises during your move.”
