Marion Police Department prepares to welcome two new K9 officers
MARION, Ill., (KBSI) – The Marion Police Department is gearing up to introduce two new K9 officers to its team, following the recent passing of K9 Benzo and the retirement of veteran K9 Zara. Thanks to the community’s generous support, the new dogs and their training will be fully funded, with no costs incurred by the city.
K9 Benzo, the department’s newest police dog, passed away in June due to health issues. Benzo was funded by a donation from local veterinarian Dr. Robert Miller, who named the dog after his own beloved pet, Benson. The same kennel that provided Benzo will be donating a replacement dog and covering all training costs. An officer is expected to travel for training in September, with the new K9 set to begin service in November.
K9 Zara, who served alongside Sergeant Daniel Ogden for nearly eight years, officially retired this week. During her illustrious career, Zara played a crucial role in the seizure of over 7 pounds of methamphetamine, 490 pounds of marijuana, and more than $20,000 in drug-related cash. She also contributed to 11 criminal apprehensions. In honor of Zara’s retirement, the McCabe Family Foundation is funding the full $19,870 needed for a new dog and training.
“These K9s are invaluable to our department,” said Police Chief David Fitts. “They’re more than just police dogs – they’re partners to our officers, providing critical support in various situations, from drug detection to community outreach.” Both officers assigned to the incoming K9s will begin their training in September, with the new dogs expected to join the force later this fall.
