$160K grant keeps Carbondale warming center open 24/7 during winter freeze

CARBONDALE, Ill., (KBSI) — The Carbondale Warming Center has resumed 24-hour operations after receiving a state grant that will fund services through the end of the current fiscal year.
Center officials said the $160,000 grant was awarded through an emergency and transitional housing program administered by the Illinois Department of Human Services. The funding allows the facility to provide around-the-clock shelter and support services for people experiencing homelessness during the winter months.
Prior to the award, the warming center had reduced operations to overnight weekend hours because of financial constraints. Officials said the expanded schedule will offer more consistent access to shelter and resources for residents who depend on the facility.
The organization is also working to relocate to a different building before next winter, citing concerns about the condition of its current facility. Leaders said a move would allow for expanded services and additional space.
The center collaborates with local agencies, churches and outreach groups to connect guests with medical care, transportation and housing resources when available. Staff said demand for services typically rises during extended periods of freezing temperatures and winter storms in Southern Illinois.
Officials said the warming center continues to accept donations to help offset daily operating expenses. Frequently requested items include paper products, cleaning supplies and laundry detergent. Monetary donations are also being accepted to support programming and facility maintenance.
