Prosecutors seek death penalty in Kaniah Jennings case

FOX23 News at 9 p.m

PEMISCOT COUNTY, Mo., (KBSI) — Court records show Pemiscot County Prosecuting Attorney Steven Horton has filed notice of intent to seek the death penalty against Kennan Peoples and Blake Patrick in connection with Jennings’ death.

An attorney with the Missouri State Public Defender has also entered an appearance as co-counsel for Peoples.

Prosecutors have filed a motion to continue preliminary hearings scheduled for April 8 for Peoples and two co-defendants. The state said the request is tied to the death penalty filing and the need to coordinate hearings due to shared evidence and witnesses.

The motion also states final reports from the Missouri State Highway Patrol have not yet been completed, meaning defense attorneys do not yet have all evidence in the case.

Officials said the request is not meant to delay proceedings but to ensure a fair process. The court has not yet ruled on the motion.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Troop E Headquarters at 573-840-9500.
