CARBONDALE, Ill. (KbSI) — Southern Illinois University Carbondale, in partnership with the City of Carbondale, has launched a new website to highlight local events tied to the nation’s upcoming 250th anniversary.
The “America at 250” webpage will serve as a central hub for campus and community activities marking the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The site will feature programs, performances, exhibits and discussions hosted by university groups, community partners and student organizations.
Officials said the page will be updated regularly and includes a form for the public to submit events.
Among the events planned in Carbondale:
The Southern Illinois Music Festival, scheduled June 18 through July 4 at venues across the region, will feature three centuries of American music. The festival will conclude with a live orchestra performance during the city’s Fourth of July fireworks celebration at the Banterra Center.
“CarbonRail: Celebrating Carbondale’s Role in American History” is set for June 27 at the Southern Illinois Multimodal Station and the Varsity Center. The event will include a city proclamation, live music, silent film screenings and the premiere of a new play about the arrival of the first train to Carbondale in 1854.
The Carbondale 2126 Time Capsule Celebration will take place at noon July 2 at the Southern Illinois Multimodal Station. Community members will gather as a time capsule is placed to be opened in 2126.
City and university leaders said the initiative aims to celebrate history while encouraging community engagement and reflection on the future.
