Emergency crews prevent fuel spill from reaching storm drain

MADISON COUNTY, Tenn., (KBSI)— Madison County Fire Department crews responded to a diesel fuel spill Thursday morning at a local gas station, according to fire officials.

Crews were dispatched around 8:30 a.m. and found a large diesel spill in the parking lot that was moving toward a nearby storm drain.

Officials said the spill happened during the offloading process from a fuel tanker after a hose became disconnected.

Firefighters worked to contain the spill by protecting storm drains and preventing fuel from entering the environment. Crews also worked with the Jackson-Madison County Emergency Management Agency and a contracted cleanup company to manage the scene safely.

Officials reminded the public to report fuel spills immediately and warned against washing or sweeping fuel into storm drains because of the risk of environmental contamination.
