Coroner identifies 12 victims in deadly Butler Memorial Airport plane crash

BUTLER, Mo., (KBSI) — The Bates County Coroner’s Office has identified the 12 people believed to have died in a plane crash at Butler Memorial Airport on June 14.
Coroner Jerret Reno said the names were released after next-of-kin notifications were completed. Authorities cautioned that the investigation remains ongoing and positive identification efforts are still being finalized.
The victims identified by the coroner’s office are:
- Kurt John Roy, 69, of Windber, Pennsylvania
- Michael R. Shanahan, 54, of Kansas City, Missouri
- David Hershberger, 54, of Liberty, Missouri
- Sai Karthik Varma Datla, 24, of India
- Matthew Swope, 39, of Independence, Missouri
- Dustin McKinney, 44, of Stilwell, Kansas
- Jennifer L. Sharp, 55, of Grand Junction, Colorado
- Blake Thacker, 25, of Olathe, Kansas
- Marcus Miller, 30, of Lawrence, Kansas
- Nicholas Nash, 40, of Harrisonville, Missouri
- William Fischer, 23, of De Soto, Kansas
- Dane Cordes, 26, of Richmond, Missouri
According to the coroner’s office, investigators are continuing to work with local, state and federal agencies to determine the cause of the crash.
Officials said the investigation is expected to take several months to complete.
The coroner’s office extended its condolences to the victims’ families and friends and asked the public to keep those affected in their thoughts as the investigation continues.
