JEFFERSON CITY, Mo., (KBSI)— Missouri’s largest distributor of kratom products has agreed to stop selling kratom and related alkaloid products in the state as part of a settlement with the Missouri Attorney General’s Office.

Attorney General Catherine Hanaway announced Wednesday that Shaman Botanicals LLC, which operates as American Shaman, will immediately suspend all sales of kratom products to Missouri consumers, both in stores and online.

Under the agreement, American Shaman also agreed to stop Missouri-targeted advertising, including billboards, and implement measures within 30 days to prevent retail sales of kratom products in the state.

“Kratom alkaloids, especially 7-OH, are dangerous opioids that carry serious health risks,” Hanaway said in a statement.

The agreement resolves litigation filed by the Attorney General’s Office and the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services. State officials alleged the company used deceptive marketing practices, including promoting free samples of products containing 7-hydroxymitragynine, commonly known as 7-OH.

According to the Attorney General’s Office, an investigation into American Shaman began in November 2025. The office said concerns included the addictive nature of kratom alkaloids and potential health risks associated with their use.

Under the settlement, the state may seek court intervention if American Shaman violates the agreement. The company could face a $5 million penalty if violations are not immediately corrected.

Missourians who believe they have been harmed by kratom products are encouraged to contact the Missouri Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division.
