CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., (KBSI) — Crews are removing a large pecan tree that fell onto the historic Oliver-Leming House in Cape Girardeau, damaging portions of the home.
The Kellerman Foundation for Historic Preservation said the tree fell on the house Aug. 12, crushing part of the porch and damaging the front columns, gutters and exterior trim.
As crews began removing the tree this week, the foundation said the damage to one of the home’s columns was not as extensive as initially feared. However, the roofline, trim and gutters sustained significant damage.
The foundation has been documenting the damage and comparing it with historic photographs of the home, including images showing architectural details in the area where the tree landed.
The Oliver-Leming House is associated with architect J.B. Legg, whose work can be found throughout Cape Girardeau. Legg also designed Academic Hall and several of the original buildings on the Southeast Missouri State University campus.
Tree removal began Wednesday and was nearing completion Thursday, according to the foundation.
