MISSOURI (KBSI) – AAA reports Missouri’s average gas price rose by 1 cent over the past week to $4.17 per gallon for regular unleaded fuel.

The statewide average is $1.34 higher than the same time last year, according to the AAA Missouri Weekend Gas Watch.

Among Missouri metro areas surveyed, St. Louis drivers are paying the highest average price at $4.27 per gallon, while Joplin drivers are seeing the lowest average at $4.04 per gallon.

Nationally, the average price for regular unleaded gasoline stands at $4.53 per gallon. That is 2 cents lower than last week, but $1.35 higher than a year ago, AAA said.

AAA expects more than 938,000 Missourians to travel at least 50 miles from home during the Memorial Day holiday period from May 21-25. That figure is slightly above last year and 4% higher than 2019 levels. Nearly 800,000 Missourians are expected to travel by car.

“Memorial Day travel is expected to reach a record high in Missouri, with most travelers choosing to drive,” AAA spokesperson Nick Chabarria said. “With crude oil hovering around the $100-per-barrel range, drivers should budget more for fuel for their upcoming road trips.”

AAA said motorists can use its Gas Cost Calculator and mobile app to estimate fuel costs, map routes and monitor traffic conditions during holiday travel.
