Retired Herrin Police K-9 Bear dies after battle with leukemia

HERRIN, Ill., (KBSI) — The Herrin Police Department is mourning the loss of retired K-9 Bear, who died June 4 after a battle with leukemia.

Bear served alongside Herrin police officers from March 9, 2017, until his retirement on Aug. 23, 2024. During his seven years of service, Bear assisted officers in law enforcement operations and helped protect the community.

Following retirement, Bear lived with his handler and family. Police officials said he was recently diagnosed with leukemia and died peacefully surrounded by loved ones.

In a statement, the department described Bear as a trusted partner, loyal companion and valued member of the Herrin Police Department family.

Officials said Bear’s service, dedication and impact on the department and community will not be forgotten.

The department extended condolences to Bear’s handler, family and those who worked alongside him throughout his career.
