Rain and snow chances heading into Sunday (1/21/23)
Snow, a wintry mix and rain all possible through our area late Saturday night into the early morning of Sunday. Most of us will be flirting with freezing temperatures, especially near and around Cape Girardeau’s latitude. Flurries cannot be ruled out, but cities to the north are more likely to see snow showers at some point tonight with some accumulation possible. Areas south of Cape Girardeau are more likely to only see light rain showers.
With this in mind, an inch or so is possible more so in southern Illinois and near the borders of Illinois, Indiana and Kentucky. As this model suggests a light dusting for Cape Girardeau, expect more of a wintry mix in terms of precipitation to fall, making some spots slippery to start the day on Sunday. Visibilities likely to be reduced as this comes through.
Temperatures in the lower 30s to start will eventually warm into the lower 40s for a high Sunday. Light rain chances through the morning will end, and we will be left with a lot of cloud cover to end the weekend.
Just about everyone in SEMO, southern Illinois, western Kentucky and western Tennessee going to see the 40s on Sunday, with mid and upper 40s possible to the southeast. We will enter a quiet break in precipitation through Monday and the start of next week.
Then, another shot at some wintry precipitation in the form of both rain and snow will be possible by late Tuesday into the day on Wednesday. That will be our next system to keep an eye on as we get closer to that timeframe.
