Kennett man escapes house fire; heat lamp in dog kennels determined the cause

KENNETT, Mo. (KBSI)- Crews from the Kennett Fire Department were dispatched at 10:44 a.m. Tuesday morning, January 30th for a house fire on 800 Bluebird Drive.

According to Kennett Fire Marshal, Dennis Hamlett, flames and smoke were coming from the windows and roof from the home upon their arrival. Hamlett says the home had been burning fifteen to twenty minutes before they were called.

The owner of the home was asleep at the time of the start of the fire and woke to the sounds of his smoke detectors.

No injuries were reported but the occupant received treatment for smoke inhalation, something Hamlett says could kill you, and the occupant is lucky he woke when he did.

The Missouri State Highway Fire Marshal was called for backup on the investigation to the fire and found the source to be a heat lamp inside one of the igloo-shaped dog kennels under the home’s backyard patio.

Hamlett says he thinks the lamp may have burst and the cover was blown off, catching the dried cedar chips on the kennel floor on fire. The cover for the heat lamp was recovered by the fire department.
