Social media post about Jackson police officer leaves community shaken

SOUTHEAST, Mo. (KBSI) – A social media post about a Jackson police officer has the community shaken. A video of the off-duty officer shows him putting a juvenile in a chokehold.

Bobby Newton is the public information officer with the Cape Girardeau Police Department.

“Based on the report that the officers filed, along with the video that’s circulating social media now, it appears to be the same incident,” he said.

Newton adds that The Cape Girardeau Police Department conducted a thorough investigation, interviewing several witnesses and collecting all evidence at the time of the assault.

Brandon “Chase” Mcspadden is an officer with the Jackson Police Department.

His name is listed as the suspect on the report from the assault that took place on 1000 Silver Springs Rd. on August 27, 2021.

“At no time did the school officials ask the off-duty officer to intervene or to assist in anyway.” Says, Newton.

At the time Mcspadden was an officer with the Sikeston Department of Public Safety.

Two cape central high school students posted the video of Mcspadden.

The video was recorded by Zai’aire Thomas’ mother, Brittney Thomas she was recording her son playing on the field and has given him permission to speak to us.

He recalls, “I was playing so I didn’t really see any of it go down, until after the fact when my mom showed me the video and I wouldn’t be talking to chase pretty much ever again.”

Thomas tells me he knows McSpadden as the stepfather to one of his closest friends.

Who he now no longer is able to contact.

Thomas says, “I was really good friends with the person that it happened to as well. So especially with that, and knowing Chase, and sleeping at his house, every other occasion, I mean after seeing that my mom wanted me to have nothing to do with them. She still wanted me to be friends with (Redacted) but not if it had anything to do with Chase.”

Bryce Williams was in the stands that night witnessing the altercation…
He and Thomas both felt the need to get the word out about what happened that night.

Williams says, “I don’t like it at all…I think that given that incident, I think there should have been way more into that, I think they should have evaluated what he had did and everything like that, cause with him being a cop again, after that happening and also Sikeston ( Department of Public Safety) taking him back I don’t see any reason why he should be, one of the people who protect and serve us. If he’s out there doing that.”

Thomas adds, “I’m glad we ended up posting about it on social media, I like how our community comes together, especially for something like this. I love that, and I love that Cape is stepping up for us, since there’s nothing, we could have done about it, but get it out there. I hate that he’s being protected I would say. For something like this especially.”

In the report from Cape Girardeau Police Department, a witness states Mcspadden’s actions were “unnecessary, ridiculous and uncalled for.”

Stating Mcspadden only escalated the situation.

According to the report, the assault is still pending prosecution.
