Crisp Museum presents Underground Railroad display

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) – The Crisp Museum observes Black History Month by presenting The Underground Railroad quilt display.

The display will enlighten visitors of black creativity during a difficult time, by highlighting how black people used their quilts and artistry as a resource during The Underground Railroad.

Crisp Museum Staff Employee, Julia Vogt, says, “I think it’s really great that we’re celebrating textile arts and the creativity of a certain group of people while also telling their story.”

As a Historic Preservation Student, Vogt mentions being really impressed by the work her staff has been able to accomplish at the museum, by putting the exhibit together.

She says, “I think that the area that we live in, we have a diverse history, and a lot of times only certain parts of that history is told.”

Thanks to the Crisp Museum Staff, museum visitors are able to learn about the likes of Coretta Bishop’s code quilt or Rebecca Moore’s chain stitch sewing machine.

Vogt says to add to the enlightenment of history during this month, a guest speaker will be visiting. “On February 23rd, at 5:30, Dr. Patrick Hotle will be coming in to talk about Missouri and Illinois and the Underground railroad, and the parts played in that during that time period.”
