Accused dating app predator sparks concerns among students

CAPE GIRARDEAU Mo. (KBSI) – The story of an individual accused of traveling across the country using dating apps to assault women is gaining attention both locally and nationally.

At Southeast Missouri State University, students are expressing concerns about safety in the wake of the allegations. Lili Harmon, a senior at SEMO, shared her thoughts, saying stories like this make her think twice about using dating apps to meet new people or find a date.

“I always let friends and family know where I am and who I’m in contact with,” Harmon said. “There are pros and cons to our time, but with today’s technology and AI, people can easily create false identities online.”

Harmon emphasized the importance of communication and caution when meeting people through dating apps. She said she would always FaceTime or call someone before meeting them in person for the first time. Her advice to others: meets in a public place and remember that you can’t trust everything you see or hear through a phone screen.

The Safe House for Women in Cape Girardeau also offers resources for women seeking support or safety information, available on their website.
