AAA: Winter weather makes half-full gas tanks critical for Missouri drivers

MISSOURI (KBSI) — AAA Missouri is reminding drivers to keep their gas tanks at least half full as winter storms impact parts of the state, noting that fuel can be critical if motorists become stranded in cold conditions.

The statewide average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline in Missouri is $2.49, according to the AAA Missouri Weekend Gas Watch. That is 2 cents higher than a week ago and 34 cents lower than the price at the same time last year.

Among major metropolitan areas surveyed, St. Louis drivers are paying the highest average price at $2.62 per gallon, while Joplin has the lowest average at $2.37. Nationally, the average price for regular unleaded gasoline is $2.85 per gallon, up 1 cent from last week and 28 cents lower than a year ago, according to AAA.

AAA said gas prices remain relatively low as winter weather reduces travel demand nationwide. Prices have also been supported by the lowest gasoline demand of the year and crude oil prices trading in the high $50 to low $60 range.

AAA advises motorists to avoid travel altogether if road conditions are icy or unsafe. For those who must drive, the organization stresses the importance of keeping at least half a tank of fuel during winter travel.

“Winter storms can quickly turn a routine drive into a dangerous situation, which is why drivers should keep their gas tank at least half full,” said Nick Chabarria, a spokesperson for AAA. “That fuel can be critical for staying warm if you’re stranded and waiting for help.”

Gas prices were current as of press time.
