Tennessee Officials hold News Conference honoring fallen officer

WEAKLEY COUNTY, Tenn. (KBSI) – A large law enforcement presence was seen in Greenfield for a Weakley County fallen officer.

Law Enforcement agencies from as far as New York State were in attendance for the service of Derrick Bonham.

Lots of tears were shed as community members and city leaders, state troopers and more gathered to honor the life of the fallen officer.

Weakley County Sheriff Terry McDade sharing emotion at a news conference in Greenfield following the visitation service for Bonham. According to the Sheriff, Weakley County Deputy Derrick Bonham was purposely shot on Friday morning in Martin Tennessee in the line of duty by a female who is currently in custody. 

“I hope the person responsible, never breathes our air and if that offends somebody, then I’m offended that their offended” says McDade.  

Bonham leaves behind three small children and a wife. McDade saying that the deputy was a big part of the department.

“We kind of needed a Derrick Bonham in our office” says Bonham. “You have officers that some of them are young and ambitious and got a lot of testosterone and Derrick was a very even killed, kind and humble.” 

A memorial service was held at 2:00 pm today for Derrick, where law enforcement officers and first responders from all over Tennessee showed support. Bonham was a veteran, a father and husband, and served as a police officer for Martin, Tennessee for a year and as a Weakley County deputy for almost two years.

“Derrick gave his life in the line of duty as a result of a senseless crime” says McDade “To serve the people in Weakley County. He wore the badge with honor, courage and unwavering commitment to protecting others.”
