Carbondale business leader George Sheffer dies

CARBONDALE, Ill. (KBSI) — The Carbondale Chamber of Commerce is mourning the death of longtime business owner and community leader George Sheffer.

Sheffer was known for his ownership of Murdale True Value and his involvement in the local business community and Southern Illinois University Carbondale.

Chamber officials said Sheffer played a key role in initiatives supporting local businesses and students, including helping lead efforts to paint large Saluki paw prints on streets leading to the SIU campus and encouraging business support for scholarships.

He was widely recognized for his contributions to the region and his commitment to community development.

The chamber extended condolences to Sheffer’s family, noting his impact will be felt for years to come.
